There are many considerations to take into account when you’re choosing a new entrance door for your home, so we’re often asked questions like “what is the best type of door?” and “how do I choose a door?”. With so many different options to choose from, what homeowners see as the ‘best’ door for their home is often determined by their individual style preferences, how well it complements the aesthetics of their home as a whole and, of course, the security and protection it will offer.

Choosing a new door should be an enjoyable experience, so we wanted to take you through the journey, to outline some of the key questions you might want to consider:

  • Choose your door type

The selection of styles, glazing options and door furniture available to you will ultimately depend on the type of door you choose: PVC-U or composite. Both have their benefits, so you may wish to jump a step forward and browse the types of door styles that are available before deciding whether you want a composite door or PVC-U door.

  • Choose your door style

Whether you live in a rustic cottage or a chic city pad, you won’t struggle to find a composite door style that complements your home. Add a touch of sophistication with the timeless Classic collection, make a statement with a choice of bold door styles from the Contemporary Bohemia collection or choose the timeless charm and rustic authenticity of the Cottage collection.

If you’re choosing a PVC-U door over a composite door, you won’t have to compromise on style. The PVC-U collection includes a variety of timeless traditional door styles in alongside a striking array of modern designs that feature a stainless-steel trim around the glazed area, which make a real statement for any home.

  • Choose your colour

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to finding the perfect colour for your front door. There’s a vast selection of colour grain and woodgrain options available for PVC-U doors and over 1000 RAL colours to choose from, if you decide on a composite door. If you’ve got a favourite colour but you’re not quite sure of its name or tone, or you want to match your window frames to your new front door, show it to your installer and we’ll try our best to perfectly match it.

  • Choose your glass style

If the design of your door includes glass, your glazing choice can completely transform the whole look and feel of the entrance.

At Hurst, we provide a wide range of clear, frosted, patterned and decorative glass designs for both our PVC and composite doors. Where possible, our glazed units are handcrafted by our specialist glass team and designed to retain privacy whilst ensuring natural light is always able to enter your home. Whether you decide on a traditional style door or a contemporary door, we have a design to suit all tastes and trends.

If you’re interested in creating something really special with your glass, you can personalise your door with a totally bespoke design. As long as your design doesn’t breach any copyright rules, we can even take your favourite image(s) and print them straight onto glass using our Direct Digital Glass Printing technology.

  • Protect your home

Research shows that the front door is the most common entry point for intruders and, whilst PVC-U doors are durable and composite doors meet the requirements of Secured By Design, a police-backed standard of quality security, you may wish to add an extra layer of protection to your home.

If you’re choosing a composite door, your door will be supplied with our Kubu Equipped Avantis lock. As well as providing one the securest locks on the market, it also provides the option of purchasing and activating the Kubu Smart Kit. This clever piece of technology works via a sensor module, which you simply place into your door to be easily controlled via an App on your iPhone or Android mobile phone. You won’t have to worry if your door is locked or not anymore, simply check the App and it will tell you if you need to lock the door. The full benefits and more details on how Kubu works are available on our Kubu page.

With our lock you also get the option to upgrade your standard cylinder to the ABS Ultimate Euro cylinder option, which features an advanced internal locking system and a manufacturer backed guarantee. • Finish with furniture

Your door isn’t complete until you’ve complemented it with the finishing touches of furniture and hardware accessories. With PVC-U doors there is a wide range of handles, letter plates and numerals in various finishes.

If you’ve decided on a composite door there’s a variety of furniture options. You can choose from Antique Heritage bull ring knockers, letterplates and handles, which are the perfect finishing touch to rustic cottage doors, or architectural stainless steel pull handles and letterplates, which look stunning when combined with one of our contemporary collection door styles.
